Divahood on a Budget: Makeup

Posted on 10. Feb, 2010 by Melissa in Girly, Reviews, Savings

In today’s economy, most of us have less money to spend on things that aren’t necessities. Articles and advertisements about looking great on a budget have become a common sight in fashion magazines and many women are calling themselves frugalistas, which is defined by Wiktionary as “a person who is fashionable while being thrifty.”

Nothing wrong with that, right?

These frugalistas have started purchasing cheaper versions of the clothing and beauty products than they normally favor, and they still look great. I’m definitely a self-proclaimed beauty junkie and frugalista as I absolutely love makeup, nail polish, hair products, clothes, and shoes. I’ve realized a few things while trying to look my best and stretch my dollars as far as they’ll go.

It’s Freakin’ Fabulous!

Posted on 08. Feb, 2010 by Melissa in Books, Girly, Popular, Reviews

The title is more than a mouthful, but one of the best non-fiction books I’ve ever purchased has got to be Freakin’ Fabulous: How to Dress, Speak, Behave, Eat, Drink, Entertain, Decorate, and Generally Be Better than Everyone Else by Clinton Kelly. If you’ve been living in a cave you don’t know who he is, Clinton Kelly co-hosts the makeover show What Not to Wear with Stacy London on TLC.

Most of the time I think, “Yeah, right!” when I see a book that claims to have a celebrity author, but this is actually a different scenario. Before delving into the world of fashion television, Clinton began his career as a writer– he has a master’s degree in journalism. This book would make an awesome addition to any coffee table and would make a great present for just about anyone on your gift list.

Betcha Can’t Eat Just One!

Posted on 27. Jan, 2010 by Melissa in Food, Reviews

Since it got to the point that we were dining out for every meal (seems to be an ongoing trend in this family) we broke down and went to the grocery store yesterday.

As we were hitting the snack aisle to grab some chips Bobby said, “Hey look at these!” and picked up a can of Mozzarella Sticks and Marinara Pringles.

My first thought was “EW!” but curiosity got the better of me and I asked “I wonder if they’re any good?”

He put them in the cart.

Then I noticed a green can on the shelf next to the black ones and I yelled “Pickle potato chips! Those are SOOO good!” He looked at me like I was insane since he thought I was joking, but – yeah, sadly – I’ve had pickle flavored chips before so of course I had to get those, too.

We opened both cans once we got home to eat lunch.

Drumroll please ….

The verdict:

Mozzarella sticks and Marinara Pringles

Not too shabby! They kinda-sorta-almost taste like mozzarella and marinara (if you really think about it and try to remind yourself that’s what you’re eating) but if you didn’t have the can in front of you you’d probably guess that they were BBQ-flavor. That was what we both said after we ate a couple.

Screamin’ Dill Pickle Pringles

Pretty good, but they have a sorta bitter aftertaste to them. Maybe that’s why they’re screamin’? Don’t worry, that didn’t stop me from eating them. I love junk food, but I’m not sure if I’d buy them again. I can’t give you Bobby’s opinion since (remember?) he won’t eat pickles or anything pickle-flavored.

P.S. In case you’re wondering, I’ve given up on Weight Watchers again – bad Melissa! – so I wasn’t too concerned about buying these and ruining my diet.
